KATHMANDU: Hyundai is gearing up to revolutionize its hybrid strategy with the development of an all-new 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline direct injection (TGDi) engine.

Designed as part of the Korean automaker’s next-generation powertrain roadmap, this engine is expected to become a key component of Hyundai’s upcoming hybrid models, particularly in price-sensitive South Asian markets.

According to Autocar India, the new 1.2-liter Kappa TGDi engine is likely to debut in a new-generation crossover model internally codenamed BC4i, which is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2026.

The new engine is expected to give more power and smoother driving than the 1.0-liter turbo engine, while being smaller and more fuel-efficient than the 1.5-liter engine. It may come with either an e-CVT or a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

As per Autocar India, the new 1.2-liter TGDi engine will work well with strong hybrid systems, giving a good balance of power and fuel efficiency.

The engine is designed for both regular petrol use and hybrid systems, making it suitable for cities with strict emission rules and the need for better fuel efficiency.

Hyundai’s move aligns with industry-wide trends, especially in response to Maruti Suzuki’s new 1.2-liter three-cylinder Z12E engine, which is set to form the backbone of Maruti’s future hybrid and petrol portfolio.

As per Autocar India, the new 1.2-liter TGDi engine will work well with strong hybrid systems, giving a good balance of power and fuel efficiency. It will also meet the upcoming CAFE 3 (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) and BS7 emission rules.

The engine is expected to be made in India using mostly local parts to keep costs low.

Most of the Hyundai vehicles running on Nepali roads are manufactured in India and imported by Laxmi Intercontinental, the authorized distributor for Hyundai in Nepal. The company also operates an assembly plant in Nepal.

Since the new 1.2-liter TGDi engine is engineered primarily for the Indian market, it is highly likely that it will also find its way into locally assembled Hyundai vehicles in Nepal, especially the compact models that dominate the local roads.
