KATHMANDU: The government has proposed a new rule that will make it compulsory for EVs to have a sound alert system from October 2026, according to ET.
The Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) will help pedestrians and cyclists hear approaching EVs, as they are much quieter than petrol or diesel vehicles.
From October 1, 2026, all new EV models will need to come with this feature and from October 1, 2027, it will also apply to existing EV models sold in India.
The rule will cover passenger vehicles like cars, as well as goods carriers such as vans and trucks.
AVAS produces a soft, engine-like sound when the vehicle moves slowly or reverses. The sound changes with speed, helping nearby people notice the vehicle. Similar systems are already used in the EU, Japan and the USA.
Officials say the move aims to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving pedestrians who may not hear electric vehicles coming.
