KATHMANDU: Indian EV startup Matter Energy has launched its first electric motorcycle, the Aera 5000, featuring a manual gearbox—an uncommon addition in electric two-wheelers.
The bike comes with a sporty, futuristic design and sharp lines, giving it the appearance of a 150-200 cc petrol bike with a modern twist.
Unlike most EVs that offer silent and smooth automatic rides, the Aera 5000 comes with a four-speed manual transmission and a real clutch lever. This design allows riders to shift gears just like on a traditional petrol bike, giving a more connected and hands-on riding experience.
Matter Energy, based in Ahmedabad and founded in 2019, is known for its different approach to EVs. While many companies focus on top speed and range, Matter has chosen to balance performance with rider engagement and practical technology.

The Aera 5000 is now available in four Indian cities Ahmedabad, Pune, Bengaluru and most recently, Delhi. It is priced at Indian Rs 1,94,000 and deliveries are expected to start during the upcoming festive season.
The motorcycle is powered by a 5 kWh battery and a 10.5 kW motor, offering around 14 horsepower and a real-world range of 125 km on a full charge. Riders can use the clutch to downshift for engine braking or rev through gears just like on a petrol bike. It’s a rare blend of analog riding with electric power.
In terms of features, the Aera 5000 is well-equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen, turn-by-turn navigation, call and text alerts, geo-fencing, remote lock, ride modes, keyless start and even a reverse assist function.
The bike uses liquid cooling for both the motor and the battery, something usually found in high-end electric motorcycles. This is especially helpful for hot climates.
The Aera 5000 brings something new and different. It gives riders a familiar feeling with its manual gears, while still being fully electric. For those who enjoy shifting gears but want to try an EV, this bike offers a perfect mix of both worlds.
