KATHMANDU: The feasibility study of the Kerung-Kathmandu cross-border railway project has reached an advanced stage. Around 90 percent of the geological survey work was completed by mid-March of the current fiscal year, according to Nepal’s Economic Survey 2025/26 released on Wednesday.
The report stated that geological investigation work under the Nepal-China railway project has progressed rapidly. The survey includes drilling, soil testing, and engineering studies along the proposed railway route connecting Kerung and Kathmandu.
Under the East-West Electric Railway project, construction of 68.6 km of trackbed has been completed in the Bardibas-Chocha section of the 82 km Bardibas-Nijgadh corridor. A total of 16 railway bridges have also been completed in the same section.
Similarly, regular passenger train service is currently operating on the 52 km Jaynagar-Bhangaha section under the 69 km Jaynagar-Janakpur-Bardibas railway line connecting Nepal and India. Land acquisition work for the remaining 17 km Bhangaha-Bardibas section is in its final stage.
The Economic Survey also noted progress on the Bathnaha-Biratnagar railway project. Out of the planned 18 km railway line, construction has been completed on 10 km. Cargo train service is currently operating regularly from Bathnaha in India to Nepal’s customs yard, covering an 8 km section.
