KATHMANDU: Nepal imported a total of 1,072 cars during mid-March–mid- April 2026 (Chaitra). The figure includes both electric vehicles and petrol-powered cars brought into the country within one month.
Out of the total imports, 824 units were electric cars, while 248 units were petrol cars. This means EVs held a strong 76.86 percent share of total car imports. Petrol-powered vehicles accounted for only 23.14 percent.
SUVs remained the most imported category during the period. A total of 772 SUV units entered the market.
In comparison, 186 hatchbacks and 124 sedans were imported. No multi-purpose vans (MPVs) were imported during the month.
The rise in global fuel prices appears to have reduced demand for petrol-powered cars. Meanwhile, electric vehicles continue to maintain strong momentum in the Nepali market.
