KATHMANDU: The electric vehicle (EV) market has seen strong competition between two models launched during the 2024 NADA Auto Show – Dongfeng Naami and Tata Punch.
With sales going neck-on-neck, both models have drawn significant interest from consumers, sparking debate over which model offers better value for money.
These two models have different body designs, though. While Nammi is a hatchback, Punch has been marketed as a micro-SUV. Punch was available for sale before the Dashain festival – the peak season for car purchase in Nepal – and recorded strong sales. Nammi’s import began in October, and its sales gained momentum after the Tihar festival.
Sipradi Trading represents Tata in Nepal, while MAW Vriddhi is the authorized distributor of Dongfeng Naami in Nepal.
Customs data shows stiff competition between the two cars. Sipradi has imported 665 units of Punch since its launch in the NADA Auto Show, while 602 units of Nammi have been imported by MAW Vriddhi – a difference of mere 63 units.
While Nammi is a hatchback, Punch has been marketed as a micro-SUV.
Pricing and Variants
The two cars are available in three variants in the Nepali market. The Punch EV’s mid-range Empowered Plus S is priced at Rs 3.499 million. Likewise, the long-range options include the Empowered variant at Rs 3.79 million and the Empowered Plus S at Rs 3.99 million.
On the other hand, Nammi E1 is available for Rs 3.024 million, while the E2 and the top-tier E3 cost Rs 3.249 million and Rs 3.599 million, respectively.
Battery and Driving Range
The Punch EV offers two battery choices: a 25 kWh pack delivering a range of around 200 km and a 35 kWh option with approximately 270 km of range. The variant with a smaller battery uses a 48 kW motor, while the one with a bigger battery is powered by a 90 kW motor.
The Nammi, on the other hand, provides a 31 kWh battery in its base and mid variants (E1 and E2) and a 42 kWh pack in the E3. The E1 and E2 variants deliver a WLTP range of 250 km, while the E3 delivers a driving range of 330 km.
Key Selling Points
Experts attribute the Punch EV’s success to its SUV-inspired design, higher ground clearance and Sipradi’s strong sales network in Nepal.
The Nammi, however, appeals to buyers seeking spacious interiors, modern styling and a more affordable price tag combined with a competitive driving range.
