KATHMANDU: Motorcycles and scooters have become a popular means of commute, particularly among young people, as traffic congestion worsens in Kathmandu and major cities of the country.

These two-wheelers offer a convenient solution to navigate crowded roads and find shortcuts. Because of this growing demand, the market of used motorcycles is booming in Nepal.

The high cost of a brand-new motorcycle makes used bikes a practical and budget-friendly alternative. However, one should consider certain things while purchasing a second-hand motorcycle to avoid costly repairs or unexpected issues down the road. Here, we present some of them:

Understand Your Needs

Be clear on your purpose. Are you commuting to work, zipping to college, or using it for weekend adventures? Your purpose will guide you toward the right type of bike-be it a fuel-efficient scooter for short city trips or a sturdy motorcycle for longer journeys.

Choose a Reputable Seller

Go for well-established reconditioning dealers who thoroughly inspect and service their motorcycles before sale. This reduces the risk of hidden mechanical issues on your bike. While buying from individual sellers or smaller vendors is an option, it carries more risk unless the seller is trusted or recommended by someone you know.

What to Check

  • Brakes: Test both front and rear brakes to confirm they respond promptly and smoothly.
  • Fuel Efficiency and Leakage: Ask about the bike’s mileage and check for fuel or oil leaks under the engine or tank. Ask the seller for service records to verify regular maintenance, as a well-maintained bike is more likely to perform reliably.
  • Clutch, Chassis, Chain and Tires: Examine the clutch for smooth operation. Inspect the chassis for scratches, dents or structural damage, as these could indicate past accidents. Check the tires for adequate tread depth and ensure that lights and switches work properly.
  • Other Parts: Check the exhaust pipe for rust or damage, inspect the suspension for smooth operation, and evaluate the wheels for alignment issues. Also ensure accessories are working properly.

Check the Documents

Verify all documents carefully. Confirm the chassis and engine numbers on the bike match those in the registration document (blue book). Ensure the bike’s insurance is active and road taxes are up to date. Also the seller if the bike has been involved in accidents or reported stolen.

Take a Test Ride

A test ride is essential to assess the bike’s performance in real-world conditions. If you don’t have much information about engine and performance, bring along a friend or mechanic.

Final Advice

Once you are satisfied with the bike’s condition, assess whether its price aligns with your budget and the market rate. Factor in potential repair or maintenance costs, such as replacing worn tires or servicing the engine. Compare prices across dealers, online platforms and individual sellers to ensure you are getting a fair deal.
