KATHMANDU: Nepal Traffic Police have intensified enforcement against road rule violations, leading to a sharp rise in fine collections over the past month.
According to data released by Nepal Police, revenue generated from traffic penalties in Poush (mid Dec-Jan) increased by 12.45 percent compared to the previous month. Traffic enforcement during the month contributed Rs 80.41 million to state revenue.
This figure is Rs 8.9 million higher than Mangsir (mid Nov-Dec), when traffic fines totaled Rs 71.59 million.
During Poush, (mid Dec-Jan) traffic police took action against 88,969 vehicles across the country. Enforcement had slowed down temporarily following the Gen Z movement, but traffic checking has been tightened again in recent weeks. As inspections became stricter, monthly revenue from fines has shown a steady upward trend.
The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office stated that penalty collections are expected to rise further in the coming months as enforcement continues to intensify.
Looking at previous months, traffic fines amounted to Rs 31.37 million in Ashoj (mid Sept-Oct), increasing to Rs 49.74 million in Kartik (mid Oct-Nov). Before the movement-related slowdown, average monthly revenue from traffic fines regularly exceeded Rs 90 million. Collections peaked at Rs 120.8 million in Asar (mid Jun-Jul) and Rs 108.8 million in Shrawan (mid Jul- Aug).
Traffic police continue to penalize violations such as over speeding, drunk driving, unnecessary horn use, dangerous overtaking, lane violations, overloading, missing documents, and failure to pass vehicle inspections.
