KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police have seized 37 vehicles that were found releasing excessive smoke during roadside checks on Monday.

According to Traffic Police spokesperson SP Naresh Raj Subedi, the vehicles include 16 public buses, 14 pickup vans, four school buses, two private cars, and one rented car. Many of them were also running without valid vehicle inspection passes.

Police said the owners must repair their vehicles and pay fines before getting them back. The action was taken under the Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 2049, which requires vehicles to be in good working condition.

The traffic police have been increasing checks to control air pollution and reduce road accidents. They are also running awareness programs to remind drivers about vehicle inspections and insurance renewals.

The office plans to add a mobile emission testing unit soon to make smoke tests easier and more effective. Police said such checks will continue regularly and warned that stricter action will be taken against vehicles that break the rules.
