Toyota unveils Hydrogen Tacoma pickup with reusable exhaust water

KATHMANDU: Toyota has showcased a unique hydrogen-powered pickup at the 2025 SEMA Show.

The concept, called the Tacoma H2 Overlander, has a special system that collects water produced from its hydrogen exhaust. That water can then be reused for washing or showering while camping or traveling off-grid.

Built by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) teams in California and North Carolina, the one-off model was developed in just a few months with help from Toyota Motor North America’s R&D unit. The biggest challenge was fitting the hydrogen fuel-cell system from the Mirai sedan into the Tacoma’s ladder-frame TNGA-F platform.

The Tacoma H2 runs on dual electric motors that produce 547 hp, supported by a 24.9 kWh lithium-ion battery and a Mirai-based fuel cell stack. Three hydrogen tanks are placed inside the frame rails, while the cooling system combines parts from both the Tacoma TRD Pro and the all-electric Lexus RZ.

The pickup truck produces no carbon emissions, releasing only water from its exhaust. Toyota has developed a patent-pending recovery system that allows this water to be reused for cleaning or showering though it’s not safe for drinking. The system can also power an off-grid home or charge two EVs at once.

Despite the hydrogen conversion, the Tacoma remains ready for tough terrain. It features a TRD billet long-travel suspension kit with Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series shocks, a front limited-slip differential, and a rear electronic locking differential. The truck rides on 17-inch custom wheels with 35-inch off-road tires and uses front brakes from the Tundra.

The Tacoma H2 also includes new skid plates, an off-road bumper, recovery hooks, a winch, extra LEDs, and a white-and-blue paint scheme inspired by earlier Toyota H2 projects. A pop-up roof tent, rear canopy, and “roboformed” tailgate with a full-size spare turn it into a complete overlanding setup.

The Tacoma H2 Overlander is among more than a dozen Toyota concepts featured at this year’s SEMA Show, which runs from November 4 to 7 in Las Vegas. Other models include the bZ Time Attack, Camry GT-S, Corolla Cross Nasu Edition, and Turbo Trail Cruiser.
