KATHMANDU: Nepal’s two-wheeler market has shown strong recovery in the current fiscal year 2082/83. Improvement in overall economic activity has supported higher motorcycle and scooter sales.
According to the Department of Customs, imports of two-wheelers increased by 36.29 percent in the first nine months, Shrawan (Mid-July to Mid-August) – Chaitra (Mid-March to Mid-April).
A total of 204,667 units of motorcycles and scooters, including mopeds, were imported during this period. The data includes both completely built units and unassembled kits.
Imports rose by 50,496 units compared to the same period last year. In the previous fiscal year, 150,171 units were imported in nine months.
Unassembled units dominated the imports. They accounted for 81.88 percent of the total. Around 167,577 units were brought in as kits.
Currently, more than half a dozen brands assemble two-wheelers in Nepal. These include Royal Enfield, Bajaj, TVS, Yamaha, Hero, Honda, and CFMoto.
The data shows that 37,090 units were imported as fully built models.
In terms of fuel type, petrol-powered models led the market. Around 188,470 units were petrol, while 16,197 units were electric.
