KATHMANDU: The Indian government is planning to introduce stricter rules for driving license renewals. Drivers with a history of repeated traffic violations may soon have to pass a driving test before renewing their licenses.

According to a report by The Times of India, the proposed rule will apply to motorists whose licenses have been suspended or canceled due to traffic offences. These drivers will also be required to complete refresher training before taking the test to obtain a new license.

The government is also considering extending the validity of driving licenses. Under the proposal, a license would remain valid until the holder turns 50 years old.

At present, driving licenses in India are generally valid for 20 years or until the holder reaches 40 years of age, whichever comes earlier.

The proposed changes are aimed at improving road safety by ensuring that repeat traffic offenders meet driving standards before returning to the road.
