KATHMANDU: Chinese battery giant CATL has secured a safety production permit to restart operations at its flagship Jianxiawo lithium mine, ending a suspension that lasted nearly a year, according to Nikkei Asia.

The company received the permit on June 29, according to information published on China’s state-run Credit China platform. The permit remains valid until February 27, 2028.

CATL suspended production at the Jianxiawo mine in August 2025 after its previous operating license expired. The shutdown led to a temporary rise in lithium futures and mining stocks, as the market speculated about tighter lithium supply in China.

During the suspension, CATL relied on external suppliers to meet its lithium ore requirements.

Located in Yichun, Jiangxi Province, the Jianxiawo mine has an annual production capacity equivalent to around 46,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate. According to Australian government data, the mine accounts for about 3 percent of global lithium carbonate output based on 2025 production levels.

The restart is expected to improve lithium supply for CATL and could help stabilize raw material availability for the electric vehicle battery industry.
