KATHMANDU: Sales of electric two-wheelers in Nepal have not grown as expected. Many buyers still prefer petrol motorcycles or scooters for long-distance travel, limiting wider EV adoption in this segment.

While electric vehicles now account for around 70 percent of four-wheeler sales, their share in two-wheelers remains at just 4 percent. This shows that electric motorcycles have failed to attract buyers so far. Electric scooters, however, are showing gradual improvement.

The entry of electric scooters from established Indian brands such as TVS, Bajaj, and EV maker Ather has helped boost market activity.

Ideal for Nepali cities

Most Nepali cities are compact, with short daily travel distances. Electric scooters are well-suited for such use and are cost-effective.

In the Kathmandu Valley, an average rider travels around 30 km per day. Cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bharatpur, Butwal, Itahari, Biratnagar, Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Birtamode, Dharan, and Damak are ideal for electric scooter use.

Electric scooters produce zero tailpipe emissions and offer multiple benefits. Here are the top 4:

  1. Cost effective travel

Electric scooters significantly reduce daily expenses. Riding 30–40 km on a petrol scooter costs around Rs 200 in fuel. The same distance on an electric scooter costs about Rs 15 in electricity.

  1. Silent and smooth ride

Electric scooters produce almost no noise. Power delivery is instant, resulting in smooth and stress-free riding, especially in city traffic.

  1. High-tech features and enhanced safety

Most electric scooters come with modern technology. Features such as auto-hold, reverse mode, and smart displays are common. Safety systems are also built in.

  1. Reduced maintenance expenses

Electric scooters have fewer moving parts than petrol models. There is no need for engine oil or filters. Maintenance costs are low, and servicing is usually required only twice a year.

Tips for choosing the right EV brand

At one point, more than 80 electric two-wheeler brands entered Nepal, creating confusion among buyers. Many of those brands have since exited the market.

Buyers are advised to check service network quality, spare parts availability, and the track record of the distributor before making a purchase. Choosing a reliable brand helps avoid issues later.
