KATHMANDU: Hyundai is testing a new sub-four-meter electric SUV, with spy images of the model emerging during testing. The upcoming EV is expected to be an important model for markets like Nepal due to its compact size and electric powertrain.
Hyundai is preparing the new electric SUV for a global launch around 2027. It will be among the 26 new models planned by the company by 2030. The new EV is expected to be similar in size to the Hyundai Exter SUV currently sold in Nepal.
The SUV, developed under the codename HE1i, will compete with models like the Tata Punch EV. Unlike many existing compact EVs, Hyundai’s upcoming model will be based on a dedicated electric vehicle platform.

The test vehicle seen in South Korea features a tall and boxy design similar to the Hyundai Inster EV. It gets LED DRLs, split headlamps, a closed-off grille, roof rails, body cladding, and sporty alloy wheels.
The new electric SUV is expected to come with 17-inch wheels and pixel-style lighting elements. Hyundai has not revealed technical details of the battery and motor yet.
The cabin is likely to feature modern technology, including dual 10.25-inch screens, automatic climate control, wireless charging, ventilated seats, and a sunroof.
For safety, the SUV is expected to include at least six airbags, Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, parking camera, and parking assist features.
The new EV is also expected to support up to 120kW DC fast charging. Hyundai is reportedly developing the model on a modified version of the E-GMP platform.
The sub-four-meter electric SUV could become an important product for Nepal. With increasing competition from Chinese EV brands, the compact Hyundai EV may help strengthen the company’s position in the growing electric vehicle market.
