KATHMANDU: Indian business conglomerate, Adani Group, has taken a significant step toward cleaner, greener transportation by launching the country’s first hydrogen-powered truck for mining logistics.
Led by Adani Enterprises, the group’s flagship company, the project is a collaboration with Ballard Power Systems and Ashok Leyland.
The hydrogen fuel cell truck has been deployed at the Gare Pelma III surface coal mine in Chhattisgarh. There, the hydrogen fuel powered truck will transport coal to a nearby state-run power plant.
According to the group, this marks the beginning of a broader initiative to gradually replace diesel trucks in its logistics fleet with hydrogen-powered alternatives.
The truck features smart technology and three hydrogen tanks, and can travel up to 200 kilometers with 40 tons of cargo.
The truck features smart technology and three hydrogen tanks, and can travel up to 200 kilometers with 40 tons of cargo. Designed to match the performance of diesel trucks, it emits only water vapor and warm air, producing significantly less noise and no harmful pollutants.
The hydrogen truck project is a joint effort between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), both operating under Adani Enterprises. While ANR focuses on mining and logistics, ANIL supplies the hydrogen fuel cells and is also engaged in the production of green hydrogen, wind turbines, solar panels and batteries.
Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, is considered a clean fuel for the future. Unlike diesel, it does not release harmful emissions.
