KATHMANDU: BMW is planning to launch an all-electric version of its next-generation 1 Series in 2027.
The new model will be called the i1 and will use technology from BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup. It will be more affordable than larger BMW EVs but will share similar styling with the petrol-powered 1 Series according to Auto Express.
BMW has confirmed that its future EVs won’t rely on bigger batteries. Instead, new tech such as an 800V electrical system will improve efficiency. Some models, like the upcoming iX3, already support 400kW fast charging and show up to 30% more range with the same battery size.
BMW hasn’t revealed battery details for the i1 yet. But since the Mercedes CLA, its main rival, offers 58kWh and 85kWh battery packs with up to 780 km of range, the i1 is expected to deliver over 644 km.
In terms of design, the i1 will carry the new Neue Klasse design language. Oliver Heilmer, former MINI design head and now in charge of BMW’s compact and mid-size cars, will shape the look of the i1.
Once it goes on sale in 2027, the i1 will compete with the Mercedes CLA and the electric Audi A3.
