KATHMANDU: Global demand for hybrid cars is strong, especially in Europe, the US, Japan, China, Australia, and India. In China, plug-in hybrids and range-extended EVs are popular. In the US, Europe, and India, strong hybrid models sell well.
In Nepal, battery electric vehicles are gaining popularity. Hybrid cars, however, have not seen much demand. High taxes on hybrids have made them expensive, similar to petrol and diesel vehicles.
Saurabh Jyoti, Chairman of Syakar trading, said, “If the government had offered discounts, hybrids would have sold better. They reduce pollution, lower fuel use, and do not need new infrastructure.” He added that hybrids are suitable for Nepal because EVs cannot run efficiently on all roads.

Imports stay low
From January to November 15, 2025, hybrid car imports were low. Popular hybrid SUVs have not been imported. Mitsubishi did not bring any 2025 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid units. Kia Sorento hybrid models were also absent. Even mid-priced SUVs with market recognition are not available in hybrid versions.
Toyota leads hybrid sales in Nepal. United Traders Syndicate imported 24 RAV4 units, 19 Yaris Cross, and 10 Corolla Cross in 2025.
In total, 53 hybrid SUVs arrived. Maruti Suzuki imported 11 Grand Vitara hybrid units made with Toyota. Land Rover brought seven Defender hybrid models.
BMW sells many electric models in Nepal. But despite its hybrid range, only two X5 hybrids were imported this year.
