KATHMANDU: Competition between models from the same brand can be quite interesting and that’s what’s happening with Jaecoo’s two electric SUVs, the J5 and J6.

Both models, launched under Chery’s new energy brand Omoda/Jaecoo by SPG Automobile Company, are attracting attention in Nepal’s EV market for their unique designs and features.

There is a price difference of Rs 900,000 between the two SUVs. The Jaecoo J5 is priced at Rs 5.699 million under the festive offer (officially Rs 6.099 million), while the Jaecoo J6 is available for Rs 6.599 million under the scheme (officially Rs 6.999 million).

Even with the price gap, buyers are more focused on design, performance, and practicality than cost alone.

The Jaecoo J6, introduced last year, stands out with its retro-inspired look, rear-wheel drive, and multi-link independent rear suspension. Its 200 mm ground clearance and bold stance helped it earn the title of Nepal’s first “lifestyle electric vehicle.”

The newer Jaecoo J5, launched in July at the Naima Mobility Expo, is known for its modern and elegant design. Often called a “mini Range Rover,” it is built for city driving and offers advanced features and everyday comfort.

Motor and performance

Both SUVs are powered by strong electric motors. The Jaecoo J5 features a 155 kW front-wheel-drive motor producing 288 Nm of torque, while the Jaecoo J6 comes with a 135 kW rear-wheel-drive motor generating 220 Nm of torque. In terms of performance and torque, the J5 has the upper hand.

Battery and range

The Jaecoo J6 is equipped with a 65.69 kWh battery that delivers a driving range of 380–400 km on Nepali roads. It supports 80 kW DC fast charging, allowing 30–80 % charge in about 30 minutes.

The Jaecoo J5 uses a slightly smaller 58.9 kWh battery but offers a similar 400 km range thanks to its lighter build. It supports faster DC charging up to 130 kW, giving it an advantage in charging efficiency.

Despite having a larger battery, the J6’s range is slightly lower due to its bigger size and higher weight.

Dimensions and design

The Jaecoo J6 measures 4,406 mm in length, 1,910 mm in width, and 1,715 mm in height, with a 2,715 mm wheelbase.

The Jaecoo J5 measures 4,380 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a 2,590 mm wheelbase and 185 mm ground clearance. While both SUVs are similar in size, the J6 looks larger and more rugged, whereas the J5’s design emphasizes sophistication and urban appeal.

Interior and features

Inside, the J5 features a 13.2-inch infotainment display, 8-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone AC, ventilated front seats, wireless charger, panoramic moon-roof, and a powered driver’s seat.

The J6, with its retro-inspired cabin, comes with a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, 9.2-inch digital display, wireless charger, and panoramic sunroof, dual-zone AC with PM2.5 filter, cooling glove box, and additional storage under the rear seat.

Safety and technology

Both models come equipped with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, Vehicle Stability Control, and a 360-degree camera system. The J5 goes a step further with a 540-degree camera view for improved visibility.

Verdict

The Jaecoo J5 delivers stronger performance, quicker charging, and better overall value, making it a great choice for those who want a powerful and well-equipped city SUV.

The Jaecoo J6, meanwhile, suits buyers who prefer a bigger SUV with rear-wheel drive, a classic retro look, and features that fit an active, lifestyle-oriented personality.

Both models highlight Jaecoo’s commitment to design, performance, and innovation as the brand expands its presence in Nepal’s growing electric vehicle market.
