KATHMANDU: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has directed officials to put QR codes on national highways. Travelers can scan the codes to get information about project details, contractors, and officials in charge, and also provide feedback.
The move aims to improve transparency, address public concerns about road quality, and ensure accountability in India’s highway projects.
Gadkari said officers must respond to complaints shared online, and signboards should clearly show who is responsible for the work.
Developers will also share videos of ongoing projects on YouTube, making it easier for the public to track progress.
The government is upgrading 25,000 km of highways to four lanes, connecting major ports, and using precast technology to improve speed and quality.
Better roads are expected to reduce logistics and fuel costs, support tourism, and improve travel safety. Gadkari emphasized building modern, sustainable highways that boost economic activity and quality of life.
A similar initiative could benefit Nepal, where QR-coded highway information and project transparency would help commuters, improve road safety, and strengthen accountability.
