The third chapter of the “Discover Nepal on Two Wheels” series takes riders toward Madhesh Province, a diverse region in southeastern Nepal known for its cultural depth and expansive plains.

Madhesh Province is Nepal’s second most populated province and the smallest by area. It consists of eight districts stretching from Saptari in the east to Parsa in the west.

The provincial capital, Janakpur, is a major center for religious and cultural tourism and is known for its strong Mithila heritage.

The Mahendra Highway serves as the main east–west corridor for the province. Most major towns lie south of the highway, so riders must take connecting routes from the main highway to reach the cities.

Riders from Kathmandu and western Nepal enter the province through Parsa National Park. The Kathmandu–Parsa section covers around 93 km, while the Butwal–Parsa section spans about 201 km.

Riders from the eastern region can enter Madhesh through the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, which is roughly 141 km away from Bhadrapur.

Riders can enter Madhesh Province from three major points based on their starting location. The route from Butwal covers around 210 km, while the Kathmandu entry through Parsa National Park is about 93 km.

Those riding from the east can enter via the Koshi Tappu area, which is roughly 141 km from Bhadrapur. The full trip typically takes 6 to 8 days, with moderate riding conditions throughout the plains.

Accommodation options include hotels and lodges along the main towns of the province.

Riders will travel through Parsa → Bara → Rautahat → Sarlahi → Mahottari → Dhanusha → Siraha → Saptari. Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Bajjika are commonly spoken along the route.

Madhesh Province offers several points of interest. Janaki Temple in Janakpur is the region’s main pilgrimage site. Gadhimai Temple and Chinnamasta Bhagwati Temple are other major religious destinations.

Riders can also visit Parsa Wildlife Reserve, Salahesh Fulbari, and traditional Mithila art hubs.

The Madhesh ride provides a different experience compared to the hill and mountain routes. The plains allow longer stretches of relaxed riding, while the cultural sites offer insight into one of Nepal’s oldest civilizations.

With its blend of heritage, wildlife, and regional flavors, the Madhesh route adds a unique chapter to the journey of discovering Nepal on two wheels.
