Rs 94.13 million collected from traffic violators in Jestha

KATHMANDU: The traffic police have intensified actions against vehicles violating traffic rules. The crackdown comes amid a surge in road accidents caused by reckless driving.

According to Nepal Police, over 111,000 vehicles faced traffic penalties in the month of Jestha (mid-May to mid-June) alone. A total revenue of Rs 94.13 million has been mobilized from these offenders.

Overspeeding, drunk driving, unnecessary honking, illegal overtaking, lane violations, overloading and driving without required documents are among the leading offenses among drivers in Nepal.

Motorcycles were involved in 55.64% of the road accidents recorded between mid-May and mid-June.

Meanwhile, 2,911 road accidents involving 4,416 motor vehicles were recorded during the month. These accidents claimed 215 lives, while 580 people were seriously injured and another 3,660 sustained minor injuries.

Motorcycles were involved in over half of these accidents. According to the traffic police, 2,457, or 55.64%, of these cases involved motorcycles. Similarly, 199 accidents involved buses, and 810 were caused by jeeps and cars. Additionally, 302 were caused by trucks and tractors, 229 by tempos, 12 by dozers and loaders and 252 by bicycles.
