KATHMANDU: Heavy rainfall across the Chinese border triggered a flood last night, which has caused major damage in Rasuwagadhi.
Early reports estimate that the flood affected over 60 vehicles, including around 50 electric vehicles and several containers that were parked at the customs yard.
Surendra Prasad Subedi, President of the Rasuwagadhi Customs Agents Association, said that most of the electric vehicles are now missing. “Only 8 to 10 are left. Nearly all others were swept away along with 8 to 9 containers,” he said. Authorities managed to move some vehicles after receiving a flood warning late at night.
The flood also washed away the Miteri Bridge, which connects Nepal and China, temporarily stopping direct movement across the border.
The Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project also suffered heavy damage. So far, 18 people have been reported missing, while rescue teams have safely evacuated nine individuals.
Officials are continuing to assess the situation and further updates are expected.
