KATHMANDU: After the successful adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), the Nepali market is bracing for hybrid cars. With Chinese automakers increasingly shifting their focus toward hybrid models, Nepali consumers can soon expect a new wave of innovative, fuel-efficient vehicles.

Although hybrid vehicles receive fewer incentives than EVs in Nepal, the arrival of these models is testament to the shift in consumer preferences. With advanced technology and increasing demand, hybrids could very soon be the go-to option in Nepal.

Leading this transition are Chinese brands BYD and Omoda/Jaecoo, which are introducing three hybrid models in the near future to cater to the growing demand for eco-friendly and cost-effective transportation.

While BYD is represented in Nepal by Cimex Inc, SPG Automobiles is the authorized distributor for Omoda/Jaecoo in Nepal.

BYD Shark Pickup

The BYD Shark Pickup is a versatile hybrid designed for both off-road adventures and daily commutes. It features a dual-motor system with a combined output of 320 kW. The 170 kW front motor delivers 310 Nm torque, while the 150 kW rear motor produces 340 Nm torque. A 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine generating 110 PS powers the front wheels.

With a 29.58 kWh battery, the Shark delivers a 100 km pure electric range, which can be extended to 840 km with a full tank of petrol. Its four-wheel-drive capability and robust design make it a strong contender for Nepal’s diverse road conditions.

Omoda C7

Chery’s new energy vehicle brand, Omoda, is preparing to launch the C7 plug-in hybrid in the Nepali market. The SUV combines a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine, which delivers 156 PS of power, with a 150 kW electric motor producing 204 PS. Together, they produce a combined torque of 530 Nm, ensuring smooth yet powerful acceleration.

Combining battery and petrol, the C7 delivers an exceptional range of 1,200 km. Its sleek design and advanced tech features are likely to appeal to hybrid enthusiasts in Nepal.

Jaecoo J7

Another offering from SPG Automobile, the Jaecoo J7, balances performance and efficiency with its 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine and 150 kW electric motor. Its 18.3 kWh battery provides a 90 km electric-only range, while its fuel efficiency of 100 km per 5.4 liter makes it an economical choice.

The J7’s modern styling and high-tech interior are expected to attract consumers looking for hybrid options.
