KATHMANDU: Toyota has taken a major step in its electrification journey by unveiling the ninth-generation Hilux, which for the first time includes a fully electric version.

The new model made its global debut in Thailand, showcasing a bold redesign, upgraded interiors, and a wide range of powertrain options.

The biggest highlight is the Hilux BEV, Toyota’s first-ever body-on-frame electric vehicle. It features a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery powering dual eAxles for permanent all-wheel drive, delivering 205 Nm of torque at the front and 268.6 Nm at the rear.

The pickup offers a 240 km range (WLTP), 715 kg payload, and 1,600 kg towing capacity, while maintaining the same off-road capability and wading depth as the diesel version. Market rollout for the BEV will begin in December 2025.

Alongside the electric model, Toyota also introduced the Hilux Hybrid 48V, combining a 2.8-liter diesel engine with a 48V battery system for improved performance and fuel efficiency.

It can carry up to 1 ton and tow 3,500 kg, making it ideal for both urban and off-road use. Production of the hybrid model will start in spring 2026.

For Eastern markets, Toyota will continue to offer 2.8-liter diesel and 2.7-liter petrol options, while also confirming a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux set to arrive in 2028.

The all-new Hilux features a new “Tough and Agile” design inspired by the Land Cruiser. It comes with modern technology, upgraded safety features, and a strong focus on clean energy. This marks a new era for Toyota’s legendary pickup.
