KATHMANDU: Jagdamba Motors, the official distributor of Proton in Nepal, is preparing to launch a new electric SUV. The company plans to introduce the Proton e.MAS 5 following the success of the Proton e.MAS 7.

The company said the new model is currently the best-selling electric SUV in Malaysia in 2026. It is expected to enter the Nepali market soon.

The e.MAS 5 is designed for urban mobility and younger buyers. Proton aims to expand its reach to a wider customer base with this model.

“The response to the Proton e.MAS 7 in Nepal has been very encouraging. It shows that customers are shifting towards EVs and looking for quality options,” the company said.

The Proton e.MAS 7 is already on sale in Nepal. It comes with a 160 kW motor and offers up to 475 km range (NEDC) on a full charge.

Key features include a 360-degree surround view camera, headrest speakers, advanced driving technology, and a modern interior. It also offers safety and connectivity features.

Customers buying the e.MAS 7 currently receive benefits such as one-year free insurance, one-year road tax waiver, a free 7 kW home charger, an eight-year warranty, and cash discounts.

Apart from Proton, Jagdamba Motors also sells vehicles from TVS, Chery Wanda, and JMEV.

Production expansion plans

With rising demand for EVs, Proton is expanding its production capacity. The company has announced an investment of 370 million Malaysian Ringgit to upgrade its EV plant in Tanjung Malim.

The expansion aims to more than double the annual production capacity to 42,000 units.

Proton has seen strong growth in 2026. EV sales increased by 329 percent by April. The company has already delivered over 11,617 units in the first four months of the year.
