KATHMANDU: BMW is stepping up its efforts to improve electric vehicle (EV) battery reliability by using an AI-powered production system.
The company is aiming for zero defects in the battery packs of its upcoming Neue Klasse EV lineup, which includes the iX3, iX5, iX7 and a fully electric 3 Series, according to InsideEVs.
The first model is set to launch later this year.
To ensure quality, BMW is applying AI checks at every stage of production. Each cylindrical cell is inspected before being grouped into “cell clusters,” then connected to cooling systems, laser-cleaned and welded.
A digital system monitors the entire process to detect any faults.
“We are following a strict zero-defect strategy,” said Markus Fallbohmer, Head of Battery Production at BMW. “We use smart, AI-based checks throughout the production process to achieve this.”

BMW is working with several battery suppliers while assembling the packs in its own facilities. It plans to operate at least five battery factories across three continents, including in the US and Mexico.
The upcoming EVs will feature an 800-volt system, enabling faster charging, improved performance and longer range.
With this strategy, BMW aims to deliver safer, more efficient EVs.
