KATHMANDU: The BYD Seagull, sold in some markets as Dolphin Mini, has clinched the 2025 World Urban Car title at the World Car Awards, held during the New York International Auto Show.
According to a statement issued by BYD, the car surpassed 11 other elite contenders from across the globe for the honor.
This marks the first time that a Chinese automaker has won a World Car Award, cementing BYD’s leadership in the new energy vehicle sector.
Featuring BYD’s Ocean Aesthetics design, the Seagull combines vibrant styling, advanced safety and smart driving features. “It consistently tops several major markets’ best-sellers list and also receives a high international reputation,” the statement said. “On this occasion, it has impressed 96 professional jurors worldwide with its groundbreaking design ethos, unrivaled urban mobility performance and universal market appeal.”
Commenting on the honor, BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said they were incredibly proud of this recognition for Seagull. “It reflects our commitment to sustainable technology and exceptional service, driving our mission to ‘Cool the Earth by 1°C’.”
Following the success in 2024, when the Dolphin and Seal ranked among the top three for the World Urban Car and World Car of the Year awards, respectively, BYD said this recognition for Seagull not only reinforces its reputation as a leader in automotive innovation but also makes history as the first and sole Chinese automaker to reach the top three in the overall World Car of the Year competition.
