KATHMANDU: Chinese battery giant CATL is boosting its global electric vehicle (EV) market presence with two groundbreaking advancements in battery technology.

At the IAA Munich auto show, the company unveiled its Shenxing Pro lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, designed for the European market.  These are available in two versions. The 122 kWh long-range pack offers up to 756 km of range under WLTP standards and charges to 80% in 15 minutes. The 110 kWh fast-charging pack reaches the same charge level in just 10 minutes. CATL says both are engineered for durability, with minimal capacity loss over time.

Simultaneously, CATL announced a breakthrough in China with its Naxtra sodium-ion battery, which became the world’s first to pass China’s new national safety certification (GB 38031-2025) for EV batteries.

The standard, effective from 2026, introduces stricter rules on fire prevention, thermal control, and impact resistance. The Naxtra battery is slated for mass production in December 2025. It delivers up to 175 Wh/kg energy density, 500 km of range, and retains 90% of its capacity even at -40°C. This makes it suitable for colder climates.

Together, these two technologies reflect CATL’s dual strategy. The company is using advanced LFP batteries to strengthen its position in Europe, while pioneering sodium-ion solutions in China to reduce reliance on lithium resources and expand EV adoption in challenging climates.
