KATHMANDU: Many dealers in Nepal promote electric vehicles as low-maintenance vehicles, claiming that owners only need to service the tires, wiper blades and cabin air filter. It, however, tells only part of the story.
Indeed, EVs generally require less maintenance over their lifetime than petrol or diesel vehicles. Since EVs do not have internal combustion engines or gearboxes, there is no need for routine oil changes and gear oil checks. But this doesn’t mean they are entirely maintenance-free.
EVs still need basic fluids like windshield washer fluid and brake fluid. Since regenerative braking uses the electric motor to slow the vehicle while recovering energy, it extends the lifespan of brake components.
Is EV Maintenance Cheaper?
EVs have fewer moving parts which means fewer things can go wrong. While petrol cars rely on complex engines with hundreds of components operating in unison, EVs typically operate with just one or two electric motors.
Do EV Batteries Need Replacing?
EV batteries are built to last as long as the vehicle itself, typically 10 to 15 years. Over time, their capacity gradually declines—usually around 20% over the vehicle’s lifespan—but not enough to significantly affect daily usability.
Studies have shown that EV batteries often last longer than expected. A Stanford University study found that driving in real-world conditions—frequent acceleration, braking and varying conditions—can actually lead to better energy retention than what is observed in lab conditions.
Do EV Motors Require Servicing?
Electric motors in EVs are designed for long-term use and rarely require regular servicing. The coolant pump, responsible for maintaining optimal battery and motor temperature, also has a long service life but should still be inspected periodically.
What About Brake Maintenance?
While EVs also use conventional brake systems, regenerative braking significantly reduces wear. Brake fluid remains essential, and like in traditional cars, EVs will alert drivers if fluid levels are low.
Which EV Components Need Regular Checks?
In EVs, components like tires and wiper blades are made of rubber. Brakes, windshield washer fluid, suspension components, air filters and bulbs require regular checks for maintenance or other functions, just like in petrol vehicles.
Do EV Tires Wear Out Faster?
EVs are typically heavier than petrol cars due to their battery packs. They also deliver instant torque, which can cause faster tire wear. Because of this, EVs require larger, sturdier tires that may need more frequent replacement.
However, if a petrol car is driven as aggressively as an EV, its tires may wear out in a similar manner.
