KATHMANU: The Supreme Court of India has suggested that the government consider a phased ban on high-end luxury cars powered by petrol and diesel as a way to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in India, according to Bar and Bench.
A Bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made the observation while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation, represented by advocate Prashant Bhushan.
The petition seeks effective implementation of government policies to promote EV usage.
Justice Kant noted that many premium electric models now offer similar comfort and performance to conventional “gas guzzlers” used by VIPs and big corporations. “Just think of imposing a ban on the very high-end vehicles first of all. It will not affect the common man, because only a small section of the population can afford these vehicles,” he remarked.
Attorney General R Venkataramani informed the court that 13 ministries are currently involved in policymaking related to EV promotion.
The court’s suggestion, if pursued, could signal a major policy shift aimed at reducing emissions and driving early adoption of electric mobility in the premium segment.
