KATHMANDU: Tata Motors is exploring the possibility of introducing hybrid powertrains in the future as part of its broader strategy to stay competitive in India’s evolving automotive market.
While the company remains committed to electric vehicles as its primary focus for now, it has acknowledged that hybrids may be considered, depending on market conditions and product requirements.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, recently told Autocar India that, while hybrids are not currently a core part of the company’s portfolio, the technology is being evaluated for select segments where performance or competitiveness may demand it.
The company estimates that electric vehicles (EVs) will contribute to 30% of its overall sales in the coming years, followed by compressed natural gas (CNG) at 27%. Diesel models are expected to account for 6–10%, while the remainder will come from petrol and potential hybrid variants.
Tata is not the only Indian automaker exploring hybrid technology. Several leading automakers, such as Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra and Renault, have already begun working on hybrid technologies and are preparing to launch new hybrid models in India. Tata has not made a formal announcement regarding the rollout of its hybrid models.
Tata Motors continues to maintain a strong position in Nepal across both passenger and commercial vehicle segments. Its electric vehicles have been among the top-selling EV models in the Nepali market.
