KATHMANDU: Jaguar Land Rover, in partnership with Chery, has unveiled the production version of the Freelander 8 at the Beijing Auto Show. The new model marks the return of the Freelander nameplate as a separate electrified SUV brand.
The Freelander 8 is positioned as a large SUV and is bigger than the Land Rover Defender 110 in overall dimensions. The company has confirmed that it will be offered in global markets with both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive configurations.
The SUV is based on a new iMAX platform developed under the joint venture. This architecture supports multiple powertrain options, including battery electric, extended-range electric, and plug-in hybrid versions. All variants will use an 800V electrical system. The fully electric model is expected to support DC fast charging speeds of up to 350 kW.
In terms of design, the production model remains close to the earlier concept version. It features square-shaped LED headlamps, a closed front fascia, and blacked-out air intake elements on the bumper. A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor has also been added for advanced driver assistance systems.
The side profile gets flared wheel arches, rugged body cladding, roof rails, and dual-tone alloy wheels. At the rear, the SUV has slim tail lamps, a roof spoiler, and black bumper inserts. The concept model’s rear suicide doors have been replaced with conventional doors in the production version.
Interior details have not been fully revealed yet. However, the company has confirmed a large integrated Mini LED display, which is expected to stretch across the dashboard. It will also offer zero-gravity front seats designed to improve comfort.
The Freelander brand plans to introduce six new models over the next five years under the Chery-JLR partnership. While the SUV is intended for several global markets, it is unlikely to be launched in the United States.
More technical details, including battery size and driving range, are expected closer to its market launch.
