KATHMANDU: Competition in Nepal’s electric SUV market is heating up, with BYD and Changan Group’s new-energy vehicle brand Nevo going head-to-head in the same price range.
The BYD Atto 2 and Nevo Q05 are now competing directly on price, performance, range, space and features. Both models are positioned as family-oriented electric SUVs, but each has its own strengths.
Price
The BYD Atto 2 is available in three variants in Nepal. The Atto 2 Essential is priced at Rs 4.595 million, while the Premium and Superior variants cost Rs 4.899 million and Rs 5.199 million, respectively.
The Nevo Q05 is available in Max and Ultra variants. The Max is priced at Rs 4.899 million, while the Ultra costs Rs 5.199 million.
MAW Vriddhi is currently offering a Rs 200,000 introductory discount on both Q05 variants. With the discount, the Q05 Ultra becomes cheaper than the Atto 2 Superior.
Size
The two SUVs differ noticeably in their dimensions. The BYD Atto 2 measures 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width and 1,675 mm in height. It has a 2,620 mm wheelbase and 200 mm ground clearance.
The Nevo Q05 is larger in length and wheelbase. It measures 4,435 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,600 mm tall. Its wheelbase measures 2,735 mm.
The Q05 is therefore 125 mm longer and has a 115 mm longer wheelbase than the Atto 2. This should give it an advantage in rear-seat legroom.
However, the Atto 2 is taller and offers 10 mm more ground clearance. Overall, the Q05 has an advantage in exterior length and wheelbase, while the Atto 2 has the edge in height and ground clearance.
Engine and performance
The Nevo Q05 has the advantage in motor output. The Nepal-spec BYD Atto 2 uses a 100 kW permanent-magnet synchronous motor producing 290 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9 seconds.
The Q05 uses a 120 kW electric motor and claims a 0-100 km/h time of 8.2 seconds. On paper, the Q05 therefore offers stronger performance.
Similar battery capacity
Battery capacity is almost identical between the two models. The Atto 2 Premium gets a 51.13 kWh BYD Blade Battery, while the Q05 uses a 51.9 kWh LFP battery.
BYD’s battery uses Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology, which integrates the battery pack with the vehicle structure. The Q05 also uses an LFP battery, a chemistry widely used in EVs for its durability and safety characteristics.
The Atto 2 Premium and Superior offer a claimed 345 km WLTP range. The Q05 has a claimed 360 km WLTP range.
Actual range will depend on driving conditions, temperature, road conditions and driving style. A direct real-world comparison on Nepal’s roads has yet to be conducted.
Charging
Charging capability is another area where the two models take different approaches. The Atto 2 supports up to 11 kW AC charging and up to 82 kW DC charging according to the Nepal specification.
The Q05 is claimed to support up to 7 kW AC and 162 kW DC charging. This gives the Q05 a significant advantage in maximum DC charging capacity, while the Atto 2 has the higher AC charging capacity.
Boot space
The Q05 has a clear advantage in luggage capacity. The Atto 2 offers 380 liters of boot space, which expands to 1,320 liters with the rear seats folded.
The Q05 offers 540 liters of boot space. That is 160 liters more than the Atto 2 in normal configuration. For buyers looking for a practical family SUV, the Q05 therefore has an important advantage.
Suspension
Both SUVs use a similar suspension layout. The Atto 2 comes with a MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion-beam rear suspension. The Q05 also uses MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear.
However, suspension tuning, tire size, vehicle weight and chassis calibration can make a significant difference to ride and handling.
ADAS features
Both models offer advanced driver assistance systems, but the Q05 has a broader list of features in its top variant. The Atto 2 comes with features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Jam Assist and Automatic Emergency Braking.
It also gets a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking radar and TPMS.
The Q05 Ultra adds features including Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Lane Change Assist, Safe Exit Warning, High Beam Assist and Safe Distance Warning. On ADAS equipment, the Q05 has the advantage, particularly in its top-spec Ultra variant.
Interior and technology
Both SUVs feature modern digital cabins.
The Atto 2 gets a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen, one of BYD’s distinctive interior features. It also has an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, eight-speaker audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, ventilated front seats and an electric tailgate.
The Q05 features a larger 14.6-inch touchscreen and a 10.17-inch digital instrument cluster. It also offers 256-color ambient lighting, smartphone remote control, OTA updates, wireless phone charging and multiple smart scenario modes.
The Atto 2 focuses on BYD’s familiar rotating-screen design and comfort features, while the Q05 counters with a larger central display and a more technology-focused cabin.
Verdict
The BYD Atto 2 has advantages in ground clearance, height, AC charging capacity and BYD’s Blade Battery/CTB technology.
The Nevo Q05, meanwhile, offers more cabin length, a longer wheelbase, more power, quicker acceleration, slightly longer claimed range, significantly larger boot space and stronger maximum DC charging capability.
With the Q05 also receiving an introductory discount, the competition becomes even tighter. On specifications alone, the Q05 appears stronger as a value-for-money package, while the Atto 2 retains the advantage of BYD’s established EV technology and brand presence.
