KATHMANDU: A total of 9,850 electric jeeps, cars and vans were imported into the country over the first 10 months of fiscal year 2024/25.
Most of these electric vehicles came from China and India, while a few were imported from Malaysia, Germany, the USA and Indonesia.
China has been the largest source market for EVs in Nepal for the past couple of years. The latest import data shows 74.55% of all EV imports, or 7,344 units of electric cars, came from China in this 10-month period.
India ranked second with 2,414 units, accounting for 24.50% of the total EV imports. The remaining countries supplied only 92 units.
Import Breakdown by Peak Motor Power
Up to 50 kW Peak Power: A total of 3,369 EVs in this category were imported into the country in the 10 months. Of this, 1,900 units came from China, while 1,466 units were imported from India and three from Indonesia. This segment shows strong competition between Chinese and Indian products.

51–100 kW Peak Power: In the review period, a total of 5,534 units were imported in this segment which is completely dominated by China. A whopping 4,597 units came from China, nearly five times more than India (936 units). One unit was imported from South Korea in this category.
101–200 kW Peak Power: China dominated this segment as well with 834 units imported, far ahead of Malaysia (50 units), Germany (26 units), India (9 units), USA (5 units) and South Korea (3 units).
201–300 kW Peak Power: China was also ahead in this segment with 11 units imported until mid-May), followed by Germany with 6 units and the USA with 1 unit.

Total Import Costs
These imports cost the country’s exchequer Rs 23.09 billion. The government mobilized Rs 14.24 billion in revenue from EV imports in the review period.
