KATHMANDU: MAW Group has rejected allegations of customs, VAT and tax evasion. The company said the claims are baseless and made without factual or legal evidence.

In a statement, MAW Group said it was subjected to “media trial” without proof. The company urged media and concerned authorities not to spread misleading information.

A complaint alleging tax evasion was registered at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on May 8, 2026 under registration number 6384.

According to the company, the complaint was filed with the intention of damaging its business reputation and misleading the Prime Minister’s Office.

MAW said MAW Vriddhi Commercial Vehicles has been importing Foton electric vehicles using internationally accepted HS codes. The company added that all customs duties and taxes were paid after customs clearance.

The company clarified that the issue raised by the Office of the Auditor General in fiscal year 2023/24 was related to administrative classification of HS codes and not customs evasion.

MAW stated that it has already filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court of Nepal regarding the dispute. The court had issued an interim stay order on August 24, 2025 against the implementation of the customs office decision. The company said the case is still under judicial review.

Regarding VAT-related allegations linked to a 2010 report, the company said it had already paid all taxes, interest and penalties as per the final tax assessment order issued by the Inland Revenue Department and Large Taxpayer Office.

The company also rejected claims that it had shut down operations. It stated that the company is still operational.

MAW Group said all its companies operate under Nepal’s laws and regulatory framework. It added that all tax liabilities, including VAT and income tax, are paid on time.

According to the company, it was among Nepal’s highest taxpayers in recent fiscal years. MAW Hire Purchase was recognized by the Inland Revenue Office in Biratnagar for being one of the highest income tax contributors in the service sector for two consecutive fiscal years.

The company said it has contributed to Nepal’s transport sector through modern vehicle technology and has created direct and indirect employment for more than 5,000 people nationwide. It also claimed to have contributed more than Rs 11.5 billion in revenue to the state so far.
