KATHMANDU: Nepal’s automobile sector, which slowed down after the COVID-19 pandemic, is gradually gaining momentum. Sales of passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and two-wheelers have been increasing in recent months.
In recent years, Nepal’s auto market has been shifting towards electric vehicles. Nepal has become one of the countries with a high EV penetration rate. EV adoption is growing not only in Kathmandu Valley but also in major cities outside the capital.
However, customers continue to face challenges related to charging facilities, after-sales service, and spare parts availability.
Although the automobile sector is moving towards recovery, businesses are still facing several challenges. Auto dealers have been dealing with issues such as policy instability, slower-than-expected demand growth, limited business environment, and lack of proper infrastructure.
The challenges also vary by location and market segment. To understand the ground reality of the auto sector, the MeroAuto team visited Chitwan and interacted with local auto businesses.
The discussion covers the current condition of the Chitwan auto market, vehicle sales, service facilities, spare parts availability, the recondition market, and the experiences of auto entrepreneurs.
