KATHMANDU: Nepal imported nearly 8,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the first nine months of the current fiscal year 2024/25.
According to the latest data from the Department of Customs, the country imported 7,967 units of electric cars, jeeps and vans worth Rs 18.62 billion between mid-July 2024 and mid-April 2025.
The government collected Rs 11.47 billion in revenue from EV imports during this period.
Data shows more than 50% of total imports were in the 51-100 kW motor capacity range. A total of 4,414 units of EVs with motor capacity in the 51-100 kW range were imported over the nine months. Smaller EVs with up to 50 kW motors accounted for 2,783 units.
Likewise, 742 units were in the 101-200 kW range, 17 in the 201-300 kW range, and two units with motor capacity above 300 kW.
China was the undisputed leader in Nepal’s EV market, accounting for 74.08% of the total imports during the review period. EVs worth Rs 14.49 billion were imported from the northern neighbor in this period, followed by India with 2,023 units valued at Rs 3.85 billion. Indian EVs captured 25.39% of Nepal’s EV market in the nine-month period.
Imports from other countries remained negligible, with Germany exporting 31 units. Similarly, five units came from the US and three units each from South Korea and Indonesia.
