New BYD pickup caught on test run

KATHMANDU: A new BYD pickup has been spotted on test run. The model is expected to make its market debut in South America in 2026.

Its appearance is notable because BYD already sells the Shark pickup in global markets. The new model seems smaller than the Shark and will likely target a lower segment.

Test photos show a double-cab body and a smaller cargo bed than the Shark. The exterior carries BYD’s older “Dragon Face” styling. Interior shots suggest a simpler cabin aimed at value-focused buyers.

Technical details are still unknown. Some reports suggest BYD may use its plug-in hybrid system. The test vehicle appears to use a unibody structure, not a body-on-frame setup. A double-wishbone rear suspension is also visible. These features make it different from traditional pickups.

For comparison, the BYD Shark is built on the DMO platform. It is 5,457 mm long, 1,971 mm wide, and 1,925 mm tall, with a 3,260 mm wheelbase. It uses a 1.5-liter engine and two electric motors that produce more than 430 hp. It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The new pickup sits below the Shark in size and design. If launched, it will expand BYD’s pickup lineup and offer a lighter, more affordable option in international markets.
