KATHMANDU: China has introduced a new multi-department policy calling on automakers to increase the use of recycled materials in vehicle production. The automotive sector has been identified as a key focus area under the new action plan, according to media reports.

The policy encourages wider use of recycled steel, aluminum, plastics, and other materials in vehicle bodies, interior parts, and non-critical components. Automakers are asked to adopt these materials where technical and regulatory conditions allow.

Authorities also aim to improve recycling from end-of-life vehicles. The plan promotes standardized vehicle dismantling, higher material recovery rates, and better processing of recycled metals and plastics to ensure a stable supply for manufacturers.

Battery production is another priority. The policy calls for more recycled materials in battery manufacturing and stronger systems for collecting and recycling used batteries, especially as electric vehicle adoption grows.

The action plan also proposes new standards, certification, and traceability systems for recycled materials. These measures are intended to ensure quality, safety, and reliability in vehicle manufacturing.

Overall, the policy aims to strengthen China’s recycling ecosystem and reduce dependence on primary raw materials, while promoting circular practices across the automotive industry.
