KATHMANDU: A wide range of Chinese car brands, ranging from low-quality vehicles to those made by established multinational companies, are available in Nepal.
More than two dozen Chinese car brands, most of them producing EVs, are present in the local market. Despite this influx, five of the most prominent and globally recognized Chinese car brands have yet to enter the Nepali market.
China is home to both legacy automakers and attractive automotive startups. Many established companies have created multiple sub-brands, and several of these have already made their way into Nepal. So much so, both the original and rebadged versions of Chinese models are now available in Nepal.
However, some of the most talked-about names in the Chinese automotive industry are still missing from Nepal. Here, we present five major Chinese car brands that have yet to enter the Nepali market.
1. Xiaomi Auto
Xiaomi is a household name in Europe, America, Africa and Asia, mainly due to its electronic appliances. The company is now making headlines in the automotive world. Xiaomi Auto is the youngest car startup in China.
Last year, Xiaomi introduced its first model, the SU 7 sedan, which took the world by surprise. Earlier this year, it launched the YU 7 SUV, which also gained significant international attention.
While more than two dozen Chinese car brands, most of them producing EVs, are present in the local market, some major brands are missing.
Despite the global buzz, Xiaomi Auto’s vehicles have not entered the Nepali market. This is primarily because the company has not begun exporting its products outside China. Also, its two models are not available in the right-hand drive version yet.
According to news reports, Xiaomi will start selling its electric vehicles outside China by 2027.
2. NIO Auto
NIO has emerged as a major player in China by reducing range anxiety through its extensive battery swapping stations. Its swapping model is already being adopted in several countries.

The electric two-wheeler brand Gogoro has introduced a similar concept in Nepal.
NIO has established over 3,000 battery swapping stations in China and around 50 in Europe. In Nepal, a company under Vishal Group has already secured NIO dealership. However, due to the lack of right-hand-drive variants, NIO vehicles are expected to arrive in Nepal only by 2026.
3. Li Auto
Founded by Li Xiang in 2015, Li Auto is a popular new energy vehicle manufacturer in China. It was launched as a public company from the outset and introduced its first model, the Li One, in 2019. By 2020, the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 2021, Li Auto acquired Hyundai’s manufacturing plant in Beijing to expand its production capacity. Specializing in SUVs, the brand is known for its performance and innovation. However, since it has yet to produce right-hand-drive models, there is no confirmed timeline for its entry into Nepal.
4. AITO
AITO is a joint venture between Chinese tech giant Huawei and the Seres Group. It has quickly emerged as a strong contender in the electric vehicle scene in China. AITO vehicles feature Huawei’s Harmony OS cockpit system, which includes smart instrument clusters and augmented reality (AR) head-up displays, making the cars stand out in the tech-driven automotive segment.

MAW Vriddhi is the authorized distributor of Seres in Nepal. brand. However, AITO models have not entered the Nepali market yet.
AITO SUVs are equipped with Huawei’s Level 2+ autonomous driving system, featuring 128 LiDARs, 11 HD cameras, 3mm radar units and 12 ultrasonic radars. Like many other brands on this list, the lack of right-hand-drive variants has delayed its entry into Nepal.
5. Hongqi
Owned by the FAW Group, Hongqi is China’s oldest automobile brand, established in 1958. Often referred to as the “Rolls-Royce of China,” Hongqi vehicles are traditionally used by Chinese presidents, top leaders and corporate executives.

Though the company halted production in 1981, it resumed in 1995. In 2018, Hongqi began exporting its vehicles globally and entered the new energy vehicle segment in 2023. Despite its prestige, Hongqi cars have not yet been introduced to the Nepali market.
