KATHMANDU: A 14-seater electric four-wheeler assembled in Nepal is set to begin road testing from Sunday (February 8). The vehicle has been developed by Sundar Auto Engineer Pvt. Ltd.

According to company chairman Bhesh Thapa, this is the first four-wheeled electric vehicle assembled in Nepal. The company will conduct road tests in Kathmandu before taking the vehicle to the Transport Management Office for official registration.

Thapa said that more than 60 percent of the components used in the vehicle are locally sourced. The remaining parts were imported from India and China for final assembly. The overall design was prepared in India, while the body structure, wiring, and most of the fabrication work were completed in Nepal. All materials used in the vehicle have received the Nepal Quality Mark, he claimed.

The company aims to position the new EV as a replacement for the aging Tempu. In the first phase, it plans to operate the vehicle in Kathmandu, Chitwan, and Butwal, with gradual expansion to other cities based on demand. Production volume will depend on market response.

In terms of design, the 14-seater EV features a glass-surrounded body, giving it a look similar to vehicles commonly used in airports, golf courses, and large industrial premises. The company claims the vehicle can climb gradients of up to 17 degrees while carrying a full load of 14 passengers.

Thapa said large-scale production could begin next year if the government provides necessary recognition and facilitation. The final price will be determined after completing government testing and approval procedures.
