The fourth chapter of the “Discover Nepal on Two Wheels” series takes riders north toward Dolakha, home to the revered Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple and some of the most dramatic high-altitude landscapes in central Nepal.
Kalinchowk Bhagwati is a well-known hilltop shrine located in Kuri Village of Dolakha district. Sitting at an elevation of around 3,842 meters, the temple lies inside the Gaurishankar Conservation Area; the origin region of the Sun Koshi and Tama Koshi rivers.
The destination is popular for its religious importance, sweeping Himalayan views, winter snowfall, and snow adventure activities.
Kuri Village serves as the main stopover for riders. Motorcycles can reach Kuri directly, which has several tea houses and lodges. From the village, it’s about a one-hour uphill hike to the Kalinchowk summit.
Many visitors stay overnight and begin the hike early morning to witness sunrise over the Himalayan ranges, a highlight of the trip.
The Kalinchowk ride follows the Kathmandu → Charikot → Kuri → Kalinchowk route.

Kathmandu to Charikot covers approximately 130 km along a mostly paved and smooth highway, making it an easy and comfortable ride. From Charikot onward, the journey becomes more challenging, with an 18 km stretch leading up to Kuri Village.
This section includes steep climbs and off-road terrain, requiring careful handling and slow, steady riding. Once riders reach Kuri, the final approach to the Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple involves about an hour of hiking to the summit.
Riders seeking an extended loop can take the Charikot → Manthali → Khimti → Charikot → Kuri route, covering roughly 90 km of mixed terrain.
From Eastern Nepal, riders can connect to the Khurkot section via Itahari → Koshi Barrage → Lahan → Bardibas → Khurkot, totaling about 324 km before reaching the Kalinchowk access point.
The Kalinchowk ride can begin from different points. From Kathmandu, the total distance is about 148 km and the trip usually takes 2 days. Riders starting from Khurkot cover around 90 km, also planned as a 2-day journey.
Those coming from Itahari travel the longest route at about 324 km, which is similarly completed in 2 days.
Riders will climb to a maximum altitude of around 3,700 meters, with riding conditions ranging from moderate to extreme due to steep sections and off-road trails. Tea house lodges in Kuri offer basic but adequate accommodation.
Major attractions include the Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple, the Kalinchowk cable car, and winter snow activities such as skiing and sledding. The summit rewards riders with a 360° Himalayan panorama featuring Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, Shisha Pangma, Dorje Lakpa, Jugal Himal, and Gauri Shankar.
The last reliable fuel station is located in Charikot, so riders must plan accordingly before heading toward Kuri.
While traveling from Kathmandu, Kharidhunga lies along the route that leads through Sindhupalchowk and into Dolakha, acting as a natural entry point to the region.
Kharidhunga is gradually becoming a popular tourist stop, known for its quiet atmosphere and clear Himalayan views. Close to the settlement, Shiva Pokhari offers a calm and scenic escape.

Although many travelers pass it without stopping, it is a place riders should not miss. Its natural beauty, peaceful surroundings are often highlighted in photos and travel videos, making it a worthwhile stop on the Kalinchowk ride.
The Kalinchowk ride offers a completely different experience from the plains and mid-hills. The increasing elevation, shifting terrain, and spiritual atmosphere make it one of Nepal’s most rewarding short-distance motorcycle adventures.
With a blend of nature, culture, and high-altitude challenge, Kalinchowk adds an exciting new chapter to the journey of discovering Nepal on two wheels.
